Exploring the Core West Lake Scenic Area
West Lake is the soul of Hangzhou, a vast natural盆景 (penjing, potted landscape). There are many ways to explore it, going far beyond a simple lakeside stroll.
The Classic Lakeside Loop
uStart from the Children's Palace square and walk north along the lake to the famous Broken Bridge. This is where Xu Xian and Lady White Snake met in the legend. It is most beautiful after a snowfall. Continue to the Bai Causeway to reach Solitary Hill, which is rich with cultural sites like Sun Yat-sen Park and the Zhejiang Provincial Museum.
uThe Su Causeway, built by the Northern Song literati Su Dongpo, stretches nearly three kilometers across the lake. Cycling or walking along it is the best way to experience "Spring Dawn at Su Causeway," with stunning views and six charming arch bridges.

On-the-Water Experience
uTaking a boat is essential. Large pleasure boats can take you to the man-made island of Xiaoyingzhou to see the iconic "Three Pools Mirroring the Moon."
uA more highly recommended option is to rent a hand-rowed boat at spots like Huagang Cove or the lakeside. Drifting through the inner West Lake or Maojiabu area offers a quieter, more poetic experience—"the boat sails on the water, and people travel within a painting."
View from Above
uFor a panoramic view of West Lake, Precious Stone Hill is the best choice. It's an easy climb, and the Baochu Pagoda at the top is an iconic landmark. The view of "Glowing Sunset at Precious Stone Hill" is breathtaking.
uThe City God Pavilion on Wu Hill also offers a superb vantage point for views of both the lake and the city.
Traveler's Tips: The West Lake is vast; don't try to cover it all in one day. Divide it into sections (e.g., North Line: Broken Bridge-Solitary Hill; South Line: Leifeng Pagoda-Huagang Cove). Renting a public bike is an excellent way to get around the lake.
