Ancient Temples & Zen Spirituality
Hangzhou's landscape is dotted with ancient temples, adding a layer of solemnity and tranquility to the city's beauty.
The Sacred Lingyin Temple
uLingyin Temple is Hangzhou's oldest and most famous Buddhist temple, with thriving incense smoke. The main hall houses a majestic and towering statue of Sakyamuni Buddha that commands respect.
uThe Feilai Feng grottoes in front of the temple are also a highlight, featuring a large number of exquisitely carved Buddhist rock statues dating from the Five Dynasties to the Yuan Dynasty.

The Serene Neighboring Temples
uYour ticket to Lingyin Temple grants access to a larger scenic area. Yongfu Temple and Tāoguang Temple, located nearby, are more serene. Built into the hillside, they require climbing stone steps but offer a more natural and Zen-like atmosphere with fewer crowds.
uFaxi Temple (Upper Tianzhu) has become popular recently for its architectural beauty and peaceful environment, making it a great place for prayer and contemplation.
Visiting Etiquette
uMaintain a quiet and respectful demeanor when entering temple halls.
uAvoid taking direct photos of Buddha statues. Some halls may request visitors not to wear hats, shorts, or short skirts as a sign of respect.
Traveler's Tips: The Lingyin Temple area gets very crowded; an early start is highly recommended. A good route is to see the Feilai Feng grottoes first, then enter Lingyin Temple, and if energy and time permit, continue to Yongfu and Taoguang Temples.
